Parenting magazine today announced its 2009 Stinky Diaper Awards, a list of parentally-challenged newsmakers and notable anti-mom moves of the year. “OCTOMOM” NADYA SULEMAN, Michael Jackson’s ex-wife DEBBIE ROWE, and BRISTOL PALIN join THERESA GIUDICE, star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, in being awarded this annual “di-STINK-tion,” featured in the Dec/Jan issue of Parenting Early Years.
* “OCTOMOM” NADYA SULEMAN shocked the world by giving birth to octuplets – but the shock grew when news broke that she was already a mom to six others. Suleman went on to release photos of her engorged baby bump to the paparazzi, make national television appearances just one week post-cesarean, and has actively sought out reality show opportunities to further showcase her brood and extend her 15 minutes.
* DEBBIE ROWE, the late King of Pop’s ex-wife and mother of his two oldest children, made headlines this year when she reportedly emailed a friend, “Do I want the kids? Hell, no. Does it look good for me to ask for them? Absolutely,” in the weeks following Michael Jackson’s death. Over the past 12 years, Rowe has received more than $20 million from the Jackson family for forfeiting her parental rights.
* BRISTOL PALIN, teenage daughter to former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, gave birth to son Tripp last December, and just months after his birth proclaimed in an interview with Fox News that chastity is “not realistic at all.” By May, Palin flip-flopped her position as she spread the word to teenage girls that “abstinence is the only…100 percent foolproof way” to prevent pregnancy.
* THERESA GIUDICE, star of Bravo’s hit reality series, may best be known for her outrageous table-flipping, but long before that infamous episode aired, she was publicly spoiling and flaunting her young daughters for the cameras – encouraging booty-shaking during dance their recitals, bribing them with gifts to “shut up and stop crying,” and sending a message that self-esteem lies with a new set of “bubbies” (breast implants).
Others receiving the Stinky Diaper nod in 2009 include Jon & Kate Gosselin for their very public fall from reality show stardom, Ryan O’Neal for not knowing his own daughter well enough to realize he was hitting on her, and Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford and her ex-husband for their loud display of mud-slinging throughout their divorce.
Celebs bestowing crazy monikers onto their newborns, such as “Petal Blossom Rainbow” (celeb chef Jamie Oliver) and “Mars Merkaba” (singer Erykah Badu), also make the list.
